The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) established its first Code of Ethics in 1959, setting a standard of conduct that safeguards the rights and interests of consumers utilizing real estate services. Over the years, the Code has been revised multiple times to adapt to changes in the real estate marketplace, the evolving needs of property owners, and shifting societal values and perceptions.
What remains constant is the ethical obligations of REALTORS®, grounded in moral integrity, competent service to clients and customers, and a commitment to the welfare of the public. The ethics in real estate, encapsulated in the CREA Code of Ethics, serve as the benchmark of professionalism in the industry, with all REALTORS® agreeing to adhere to this REALTOR Code as a prerequisite for membership.
