To obtain the REALTOR® designation, you must be a licensed real estate professional and a member of the Canadian Real Estate Association. In British Columbia, a REALTOR® must also belong to the BC Real Estate Association and one of 10 provincial real estate boards.
As a REALTOR®, you can help people buy, sell, or rent residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural homes or property. There are also opportunities to be involved in property management, land development, mortgage banking, urban planning, and real estate appraisal.
What sets REALTORS® apart from other real estate agents is their high standard of professionalism and commitment to value for their clients. REALTORS® must comply with the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, which outlines accepted standards of conduct. Continuing education is also required in British Columbia so that real estate professionals stay apprised of industry and technology changes. Lastly, REALTORS® have access to the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) System, a cooperative listing service operated by real estate boards across Canada.
